Questions you can ask
Ahead of the October 26 election, Safe Streets Halton is surveying municipal candidates in Burlington and Oakville on their positions on transit, road safety, and active transportation. We’ll be sharing what we learn so residents can make an informed choice at the ballot box.
We’re asking every candidate the same set of questions. We encourage you to ask your own candidates – whether they’re the same ones or similar – and see how they answer.
- What do you use to get around?
- How do you envision transit expanding in the future? What will you do to improve transit rider experience and accessibility?
- How far have we come in regards to achieving Vision Zero (eliminating all traffic deaths and serious injuries), and what actions would you take to achieve it?
- Will you support transportation investments with a focus on safety?
- How will you improve the experience of walking and cycling on our streets and trails? How will you address barriers such as provincial highways?
- Do you support expanding bicycle infrastructure, which has been shown to improve the safety of all those travelling?
- How do you see transportation’s effect on people’s health and the environment (local and global)?
- Are there any land-use policy changes that you would make to ensure that people can get around without a car?
How we’ll grade responses
Every response will be reviewed against a detailed rubric so that candidates are assessed consistently and fairly. We won’t be publishing the rubric itself, but here’s what we’ll be grading candidates on. Across every category, we’re looking for the same thing: real awareness of the issue, and a willingness to act on it – not just supportive language.

Why not Milton or Halton Hills?
Safe Streets Halton is a small, volunteer-run organization, and right now we don’t have an organized volunteer capacity in Milton or Halton Hills to run this survey properly there. We’d love to cover all four municipalities in a future election! If that’s something you’d like to help make happen, get in touch about volunteering in your community.
